A compelling, flexible design for REANNZ to prove their worth

Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ) had a argument to make that need to be compelling: that they can provide fast, high-capacity network services to research, education and innovation organisations at a rate that wouldn’t be possible with a commercial provider. We created a design and content management system (CMS) that helped REANNZ prove their worth and showcase their services to the New Zealand public.

Combining technology, design & content strategy – a component-based approach

We worked with REANNZ to define the content strategy and information architecture for the website, modelling content and attributes down to the level of individual design patterns. This ensured the visual experience remained focused and consistent.

We defined a framework for content outlining their vision and what they do, and then designed and built flexible components for REANNZ to tell their stories in a compelling way – by stitching together photography, video, text, big juicy statistics and quotes.

Our CMS of choice, Wagtail, uses a technology called Streamfield, which makes it easy to edit components in the CMS while producing rich, engaging layouts in the front end.

Defining the REANNZ brand online

We worked with REANNZ's brand agency to further develop and translate their visual language – the logotype, colour, typography and the angled “connection device” – to the screen. Elements of the digital design work have been incorporated and adapted into other collateral – the best examples are the illustrated network maps we created.

Enabling faster, more efficient customer service

We connected REANNZ’s shared calendar to the support section of the site (right above “Report a fault”) so that members can check whether REANNZ are already fixing an issue before contacting them about it. We also improved their fault reporting form so that urgent enquiries are directed to a phone call; this ensures a quick response, and that the outcome and follow-up is clear.

Making more of the services REANNZ can offer their members

We helped REANNZ define a comprehensive list of their professional and technological services – grouping them logically and developing a content framework in the back-end (using Streamfield) for them to write about each service. This allows REANNZ writers to connect case studies to services in an attractive way, so that they can showcase outcomes from each service.
