Designing for immersion and storytelling

From protecting native manu to restoring ecosystems, Zealandia’s mission is bold and inspiring. The challenge was clear: how could we extend the experience beyond the fence, bringing the wonder of the sanctuary to people wherever they are in the world and inspiring them to take action for nature?

We wanted to capture the same feeling you get when you walk through the gates — slowing down, listening, looking closer. Our design process explored how to reward curiosity online: creating a space where pausing and scrolling revealed new layers of content.

Storytelling is central to Zealandia’s kaupapa, so we designed flexible components that let their team weave together imagery, words, and multimedia to tell powerful stories about conservation and environmentalism in Wellington and beyond. Their extraordinary photography library — including contributions from their community of volunteer photographers — takes centre stage. Wide-screen images, fading gradients, and atmospheric theming immerse visitors in the ngahere, connecting the forest to the waterways and the sea.

Balancing complexity with stability

Zealandia needed a digital platform that could meet high technical demands and showcase their beautiful and inspiring content. It needed to empower their team to tell stories, while also being stable and easy to use.

We created:

  • Flexible theming: The site supports multiple themes — light, dark, and nature-inspired variations.
  • Intuitive structure: We created a clear information architecture with functional navigation, breadcrumbs, and powerful search, helping different audiences (from local visitors to international travellers) find what they need. We also highlighted the ‘donate’ button in the top navigation, supporting Zealandia’s fundraising with a clearer call to action.
  • Technical innovation: Built on Wagtail content management system (CMS) and using our component library, the site offers structured flexibility. Editors can tag and surface content dynamically, embed events and media seamlessly, and tell stories in both te reo Māori and English.
  • Kupu naturally embedded: To support Zealandia’s commitment to te reo Māori while being accessible to international audiences, we developed a custom hover tool that displays English translations for te reo words.
  • Flexible tagging system: Editors can organise stories, events, and resources through a clear taxonomy and tagging structure, then pull them into components like tile blocks based on shared tags. This makes it easy to curate rich, connected experiences across the site without duplicating content. For example, to create a section or page of specific birds, they can pull in all components tagged native > birds > flightless, or get even more specific with native > birds > flightless > nocturnal.

A digital experience that lasts

Zealandia’s new website is a reflection of the sanctuary: a place where slowing down reveals beauty, where stories connect us to nature, and where people are inspired and equipped to take action to protect what matters most. It honours the whenua and the mahi of conservation, while also serving practical needs, such as clear calls to donate, volunteer log-ins, and coherent event listings.

By giving Zealandia a stable, expandable platform, we’ve created something that can evolve with them over the long term — supporting their people, their stories, and their vision for protecting Aotearoa’s biodiversity.
